This 2nd Edition of “Email Architecture, Design, and Implementations” written by Kevin Thomas, is definitely an in-depth, detailed book designed to help IT System Administrators, Engineers, and other similar professions to have a handy reference to all the basics and intricacies of today’s email technology. I was surprised at the depth of information included, stuff I have never even heard of or thought about (but then again, I am not an engineer or an IT whiz lol). As the introduction explains, the book covers “numerous aspects of email architecture, design, implementation and troubleshooting and also the communication protocols, the characteristics of large-scale architecture with other related subjects such as SPAM and legal obligations that should be considered when managing and providing email services.”Since I am not an IT expert, there were some terms and phrases used in the book that I wasn’t overly familiar with, but overall, I found that the book was fairly accessible and understandable, even if I did occasionally have to look up a technical term for a bit of further information. I’m sure anyone working in the IT field would not struggle in such a way though and would feel right at home reading this book.

I just start reading this book therefore I can't review the content but regarding to the print quality it is very bad, some titles are so weak you can barely read (
Irish author Kevin Thomas earned his BSc and MSc in Computer Science from the Staffordshire University and an MBA from Imperial College London Business School. Of note, he also holds a CISSP and is a Certificated Ethical Hacker. With over 25 years experience in large scale IT systems management, operational management and data security, he is currently Chief Technology Officer for Minds and Machines Ltd, one of the world largest domain name registry organizations and was previously Head of Operations for Aviareto (International Registry), Director of Infrastructure for Ammado, CTO for Dataelectronics and CEO for Voicelogics. Impressive background and is writing demonstrates the depth of his knowledge – informed and persuasive.
For most if not all of us the potential monster aspect of the indispensible email form of communication and all forms of business (except the now proliferation of social texting instead of actually talking!) is a daily phobia. We all use email to some degree but the intricacies of how to utilize the system is an area few truly understand. This compendium of knowledge of a book may be beyond the scope of the casual user, but for those to whom it is directed - system administrators and engineers - it is bound to become the bible.
Kevin brings the focus of the book in his overview – ‘Electronic Mail, more commonly known as E-mail has transformed considerably in both its scale and complexity over the past three decades. The changes involved have been more evolutionary than revolutionary, thereby indicating a strong desire to conserve its usefulness and the install base. Today, there is great distinction between many different e-mail operators, the numerous components used for providing services, along with the various types of components used to transfer the messages. The number of participants in the technical community has increased dramatically, thanks to the greater public collaboration on the technical, operations, and policy aspects of email. To be able to collaborate effectively and productively on such a large and complex scale, it is crucial that all participants work from a common perspective and utilize a common language when describing the components involved in the construction of the email systems. History of Email - As the 1960s progressed, companies started using mainframe and mini computers extensively. The need arose for users to send messages to each other using the computer terminals. There had been much debate and discussion regarding who invented email but the Smithsonian news on February 24, 2012, declared Ray Tomlinson to be the "Inventor of Email" on April 23, 2012. But before Tomlinson, Tom Van Vleck completed a message transaction from multiple users to one computer in 1961, and Leonard Kleinrock did a message transaction to two computer in 1969 it wasn't until 1971 that Tomlinson sent a message from multiple users to multiple computers etc’ All of the acronyms are explained better than any has offered before.
After his exhaustive history of email Kevin takes us through the various protocols (SMTP, POP, IMAP, MAPI), mail servers and how to function with them including Microsoft and IBM, how to receive and send and encrypt and make attachments, the various Email servers and their good and bad points, SPAM and how to face it and cope with it and manage it, and finally a very fine chapter on Email and the Law – this last chapter being an addition to this second edition of Kevin’s prior book. Email security and etiquette polish off this wealth of information. Or in Kevin’s final words, ‘Setting up and running a mail server requires careful consideration, planning and time for an appropriate implementation. If an organization is planning to run its an email server, numerous things will have to be considered, including operational and legal aspects.’ And all of that information is condensed in this superb book, complete with tables, illustrations and glossary.
Even the casual email user should study this definitive book. Better to be informed and prepared than hacked! Grady Harp, March 17
This book is very informative and is essential for anyone who is pursuing email architecture. The way that everything worded flows, but there are some grammatical errors, which were not a huge issue for me. It's a very dry read which is expected for this type of content, but I would recommend this read overall.
Good content, really informative...but very difficult to read seriously when so full of grammatical errors, typos, and run-on sentences! For just one example, see the sentence below
"Without encryption, an email message would be no vulnerable to eavesdrop." (Huh??)
Please do your readers a favor, and submit to a proofreader before the next edition!
this another book that is printed on demand - for me this is a big question all the time, as the more cheaper it gets to publish, the less quality evaluation work is sandwiched in between; content structure is ok-ish, but definitely demands thorough review and validation
